The URL you're describing is a friendly version meant only for humans. This new URL format is now being used in the iTunes code which I suspect is meant for both humans and spiders.

You're right about the App Store being on the web already but it's done in such a limited manner. If I remember right it's in a tiny frame with only partial app description.

But there has always been the SEO friendly shortened urls: http://itunes.com/apps/<appnamelowercasenospaces>

Working example: http://itunes.com/apps/echofonprofortwitter

Also, @Vishal the app store is already on the web. Just not in the format you would expect.

You're right. Direct app store links are visible if you do a Google query like "smule site:itunes.apple.com"

Actually, Google seems to be trying to index the app store. It even has direct app store links as top search results for some apps.

I think the bigger plan is to eventually bring the app store to the web.

Why do you think Apple would make App Store links SEO friendly, given that the App Store is not (and can not be) directly indexed by any search engines?
